Property developers have to tread carefully in Colchester, Essex, Britain’s first Roman city.

The ruins of an extraordinary 130ft-long Roman arcade with grand columns were uncovered earlier this year beneath a site that was intended for a new apartment block.

And Angel’s Courtyard, a collection of seven listed buildings including former council offices in Colchester’s historic high street, is another scheme that presented construction challenges.
