London's biggest batch of affordably priced family houses since the Eighties is being built at Royal Wharf in Docklands, and parents and kids are being given a glimpse of what life might be like in the area at a family fun day on July 29. There will be face painting for the children and a bakery workshop and barbecues.

The 310 affordably priced houses are part of a new 3,385-home neighbourhood with an uncomplicated street pattern, a riverside promenade, squares, public gardens and parks, helping to create a calm, safe environment for children.

Almost half of this mainly low-rise development will be open green space, with outdoor areas specifically designed for health and fitness programmes which will be co-ordinated by the on-site leisure complex.

Royal Wharf is also getting a new primary school, plus a Docklands Light Railway station plugging the neighbourhood into Crossrail.
