Skye Nicolson defeated Dyana Vargas by unanimous decision to retain her WBC featherweight world title on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
Nicolson (11-0, 1 KO), of Queensland, Australia, dominated Vargas throughout the fight, earning identical scorecards of 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90. It was Nicolson's first defense of the belt she won back in April with a unanimous decision over Sarah Mahfoud in Las Vegas.
Vargas (19-2, 12 KOs), of Sabana Iglesia, Dominican Republic, was carrying a three-fight winning streak (two by KO) before she faced Nicolson in her first world title fight.
With the win, Nicolson solidifies her No. 2 spot in the featherweight division, just behind unified champion Amanda Serrano.
Rankings will be updated every Tuesday. They'll be based on recent bouts, head-to-head competition and the quality of opponent. As with almost everything, until fighters square off against one another, there is a layer of subjectivity to it. Fighters who haven't fought in 18 months and don't have a fight scheduled will be removed from the rankings until they fight again.
