If your mischievous moggie has ever swiped a bite of your dinner, you’re not alone. But while some human foods are safe for cats, others should be avoided. A complete and balanced diet tailored to feline needs, providing all the essential nutrients your cat needs every day, like FELIX’s irresistible range, is essential. However, certain fresh foods can be safe as occasional treats, offering variety and nutritional benefits.

Here’s what you need to know before offering your cat a taste of your plate:

Cooked chicken: a protein-packed treat

Plain, cooked chicken is a great high-protein snack for cats. It’s easy to digest and packed with essential amino acids. Just make sure it’s unseasoned, as salt, garlic, and onions can be harmful. A small portion alongside their usual diet can provide extra protein without upsetting their stomach.

Cucumber: a refreshing bite

Hydrating and low-calorie, cucumber can be a cooling snack for cats. If your cat is tempted, offer thin slices without the skin, as that can be difficult to digest.

Rice: a gentle option for sensitive stomachs

In small amounts, cooked rice can be a safe addition to your cat’s diet. While not nutritionally necessary, it can help provide easily digestible energy. Always ensure the rice is plain and well-cooked, as heavily seasoned or undercooked grains can cause digestive discomfort.

Scrambled eggs: a feline-friendly breakfast?

Eggs are a natural source of protein and B vitamins, making them a nutritious snack for cats. Scramble or boil them without using milk or added seasoning and offer small portions occasionally. They can also be useful for older cats who may enjoy a soft, protein-rich boost to their meals.

Carrots: a crunchy snack

Cooked or raw, carrots offer a safe crunch for cats. They provide beta-carotene, which supports eye health, but don’t expect your feline to love them as much as their favourite meal. Some cats may enjoy chewing on a soft, steamed carrot, while others might turn their nose up at the idea entirely.

Apples: crunchy and hydrating

Cats may not be natural fruit lovers, but some enjoy a small slice of apple. It’s a source of fibre and hydration, though you should always remove the seeds and core, as they contain toxic compounds. If your cat isn’t interested, don’t worry, as fruit isn’t an essential part of their diet.

Mango: a succulent surprise

Here’s another fruit that is safe for cats in tiny amounts. While they can’t taste sweetness like we do, some enjoy the texture. High in vitamins A and C, mango is a hydrating treat, but only serve it in moderation and without the skin or pit. Overfeeding fruit can lead to digestive issues.

Pumpkin: a natural digestive aid

Pumpkin is full of fibre and can support digestive health, either cut up into bite-sized pieces or pureed. Just be sure to use pure pumpkin, not the sweetened or spiced versions found in tins or pies. A teaspoon, without the seeds, alongside their regular food, can provide a gentle boost to their digestion.

Foods your cat should never eat

While some human foods are safe, others can be dangerous. Here are a few they should always avoid:

Chocolate & caffeine – Both are highly toxic to cats and can cause serious health issues.

Onions & garlic – Even small amounts can damage red blood cells and cause severe anaemia.

Grapes & raisins – These can lead to sudden kidney failure in cats.

Dairy products such as milk and cheese – Many cats are lactose intolerant, which can lead to digestive problems.

Raw fish & meat – While cats love the idea, raw foods carry risks of bacteria and parasites.

If in doubt, always check with your vet before introducing new foods to your cat’s diet.
