Revealed: the most popular baby names in the UK

Sarah no longer makes the top 100 names for baby girls

Naming your child has to be one of the trickiest decisions you'll make as a parent, particularly if you and your partner don't agree...

Whether you want to go for something a little more "out there" or stick to tradition, the Office for National Statistics has released a list of the most popular baby names in England and Wales for 2017 for your reference.

And while the usual suspects, such as Olivia and Amelia for a girl and Oliver, Harry and George for a boy continue to reign supreme among parents, there were some interesting newcomers to the top 100 list (which is in full at the bottom of this article), as well as some historically popular names that dropped out.

Olivia continues to dominate as the most popular baby girl's name in England and Wales, a position it also held in 2016, while Amelia remained in second place and Isla moved up to third.

Poppy replaced Jessica in the top 10 for girls, while Aurora, Orla, Edith, Bonnie, Lyla and Hallie replaced Lexi, Zoe, Maddison, Sarah, Felicity and Lydia in the top 100 in 2017.

Leo replaced Thomas in the top 10 for boys, while Hunter and Ralph replaced Aaron and Jasper in the top 100 in 2017.

"Although Oliver and Olivia remained the most popular baby names in 2017, some fascinating changes took place beneath them," Nick Stripe, a statistician at the Office for National Statistics says.

"Leo entered the boys’ top 10 for the first time, whilst Hunter rocketed into the top 100, also for the first time, reaching number 78.

"Sarah, the most popular name for baby girls throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s, dropped out of the top 100 for the first time since our records began in 1904.

"Brand new entries into the top 100 for girls include the names Aurora and Hallie."

The baby name statistics are compiled from first names recorded when live births are registered in England and Wales as part of civil registration.
