The former lead singer of reggae band Aswad has escaped jail after being convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend after she spurned his advances.

Brinsley Forde MBE, 61, who hit number one in the charts with Don’t Turn Around in 1988 flew into a rage when he was given the cold-shoulder by Jemma Payne as the couple lay in bed, Croydon Magistrates court heard.

Ms Payne described being shaken like a “rag doll” and told the court she continues to live in fear of her ex, who she described as a “danger” to their two year-old son.

Forde, of The Courtway, Watford, was convicted of assaulting Miss Payne at her flat in West Norwood on October 30 last year.

He was yesterday sentenced to a 12-month community order, which includes 300 hours' community service work.

Forde was also ordered to pay £200 compensation to Ms Payne, £350 court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
