A man has died after being hit by a bus in Britain's busiest shopping street.

The man, in his late 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene after being hit by a Route N98 bus in Oxford Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Met appealed for witnesses to come forward after the collision at the junction with Harewood Place, a short distance from Oxford Circus Tube station.

A spokesman said he was pronounced dead just after 2am, and his next-of-kin have yet to be informed.

The bus driver stopped at the scene and a post-mortem will be held "in due course".

"Despite the collision occurring in the early hours of the morning, there would have been a number of people in the vicinity at the time and detectives are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward," a Met Police spokesman said.

Anyone with information should contact police on 020 8543 5157 or via Twitter @MetCC.
