The Londoner: Stanfords âecstaticâ after crowdfund plea pulls in £95k

Stanfords, Londonâs iconic travel bookshop, has been âcompletely overwhelmedâ by the response to its crowdfunder, which may save it from going under.
âWeâve been absolutely flabbergasted,â chief executive Vivien Godfrey told The Londoner, adding that before âwe couldnât see the light at the end of this big, black tunnelâ.
Stanfords, which has been trading since 1853, started the page last month, aiming to raise £120,000, which would sustain it until March. It has now raised more than £95,000, with 41 days left to go.
Ms Godfrey explained that goal was set before lockdown was announced, which made things more difficult as with travel restricted, âdemand has just fallen to the floorâ.
âI was feeling even more concerned... extremely depressed and miserable,â she said. But alongside the crowdfunder, news of the Pfizer vaccine has left her, and the industry, âecstaticâ.
A string of high-profile authors have backed Stanfords. Earlier this year Robert Macfarlane praised it as âboth a bookstore and a magic carpetâ.
Ms Godfrey added that one benefit of lockdown has been an increase in online orders, as readers have been doing a lot of âarmchair travellingâ. Soon, we might be able to do the real thing once more.
Stanfordsâ crowdfunder can be found here.Â
Truth is my dog Nigel was thick, says Don

Monty Don says the truth about his late, beloved dog Nigel, left, was that he was âthickâ. Speaking to Griefcast, he said fans struggled to accept the retrieverâs hidden depths were just âa veneerâ. âThey could take that he was goofy but to say he was âthickâ was the wrong word (though it was absolutely the right word).â
West and his wife âare back on and intend to remain togetherâ

Is IT all over for Dominic West and Catherine FitzGerald? Maybe not, The Londoner hears. A close associate of the couple, right, tells us âDom and Cat are very much together and intend to remain so for a very long timeâ. Rowland is like an angel - I ran, says BLK

Ray BLK says she tried to run away from fellow singer Kelly Rowland in Los Angeles last year because she was so overwhelmed. âMs Rowland was sitting there just looking like an angel. Her skin is so smooth; I donât think Iâve seen skin that smooth before,â the musician said. She told NME she had âa momentâ and tried to escape. Fortunately, Rowland handled it well: âSheâs like, âGirl, how you trying to leave me?ââ Happily they smoothed things over and âwrote a really lovely song togetherâ. Star struck.

Diane Abbott, whose constituency is home to the much criticised Mary Wollstonecraft sculpture, says the artwork is âa lost opportunityâ. The Labour MP tells us the âtiny shiny female figure... compares poorly to the statue of Millicent Fawcett in Parliament Square. That statute catches the attention and you donât have to know anything about her to go away thinking that she must have been an important and imposing figure. â She adds: âI suppose it is a good thing that art is sparking a conversation, but I was so looking forward to seeing the statue.â

Lee Cain, the Downing Street director of communications who resigned last night, has received the ultimate judgement â Ken Clarkeâs verdict. [he] seemed a decent enough chicken at the time.â The epitaph they all wanted.
