Boris Johnson was today accused of being a “phoney” after saying he feared his children may never be able to afford a home in London.

The attack by Sadiq Khan, Labour shadow minister for London, came after the Mayor said the Tories should do more to improve the housing market at a private meeting of Tory MPs on Tuesday.

Mr Khan, shadow minister for London and potential mayoral candidate, said: “For him to suddenly realise that housing matters, as he eyes up his personal ambition of being the next Tory leader, shows him to be a phoney, charlatan, hypocrite. It’s like a fast food salesman complaining that too many people are overweight.”

A friend of the Mayor said: “Boris’s record speaks for itself — new powers over housebuilding, record numbers of affordable homes, massive investment, £3 billion of public land freed for development since 2012, improved rental standards and 26,000 homes completed in 2013.”
