Footage uploaded to TikTok shows the pilot announcing that those who get off the plane will be offered âup to â¬500 per passengerâ.
Speaking via the PA system, the pilot explains: âBecause there are so many of you, itâs a pretty heavy aircraft weâve got today. That heavy aircraft combined with a fairly short runway here in Lanzarote and some winds, which arenât completely favorable at the moment, mean that [under] the current environmental conditions here in Lanzarote, the aircraft is too heavy at the moment to depart.
âOf course the one way to solve a problem with a heavy aircraft is to make it slightly lighter. If possible, Iâd like to ask for up to potentially 20 volunteers to choose not to fly to Liverpool tonight.â
A spokesperson for easyJet confirmed that 19 passengers left and âvolunteered to travel on a later flight as a result of the aircraft being over the weight limits for the weather conditions.â
The spokesperson said: âThis is a routine operational decision in these circumstances and weight restrictions are in place for all airlines for safety reasons.
âIn the event that a flight would exceed weight limits, we ask for passengers to volunteer to transfer to a later flight free of charge, which is what happened on this occasion and volunteers are provided with compensation in line with regulations.
âThe safety and welfare of our passengers and crew is always easyJetâs highest priority.â
The flight did not leave until 11.24pm â almost two hours later than scheduled â and arrived at John Lennon Airport just after 3am on Thursday.
