Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 will actually work in direct sunlight

One key change that Samsung made with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is, in regards to its display. The main display is super bright this year, with a peak brightness of 1750 nits. That matches the peak brightness of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which it announced back in February.

This is a big deal, and it does also make this the brightest foldable yet. Why is it such a big deal? Well, foldable displays are plastic, covered in a thin layer of glass and then a plastic screen protector on top of it. Naturally, plastic is very reflective, so when you use your phone outside, it makes it very hard to see. However with a peak brightness of 1750, that should not be a problem here.

It’s not a huge jump from the peak brightness on the Google Pixel Fold however, which has a peak brightness of 1550 nits. But it should be enough that it makes the display easy to use outside.

Going with the new hinge

Along with this new brightness, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 also has a new hinge, which is smaller and slimmer this year. This new hinge also allows the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to fold completely flat. Which is a first for a Samsung foldable, and definitely about time.

The new hinge is more durable, and has fewer moving parts. So it’s less likely to break. Making this a pretty big upgrade for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 this year. Not only are you getting a much brighter display, but you’re also getting a new hinge that makes the Galaxy Z Fold 5 even lighter. Which is a really good thing.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 goes up for pre-order today and it will start shipping by August 11. It starts at $1,799, however Samsung does have some pretty nice pre-order bonuses that you can take advantage of.
