There’s no doubt that classic tailoring is making a comeback.
Just look at the spring/summer 2025 menswear runways – nearly every big brand showed a suit and tie. Fendi. Saint Laurent. Dunhill. Moschino. Armani. Since the corporate look dominated the fashion month schedule, now is your cue to build up your formal wardrobe for the season ahead.
As with most menswear staples, I’d recommend keeping it timeless – well-made two pieces in versatile colours which you’ll wear again and again. The only problem? Blazers and trousers in neutral shades of black, navy or neutrals don’t really deliver on the personality front – which is why accessorising is key.
Enter: the pocket square. Where your chosen suit is the main character, pocket squares and ties are more like supporting actors which take it up a notch – the Stanley Tuccis of the tailoring world, if you will. But, while they can be the perfect finisher, they can also ruin a perfectly nice suit when done badly.
So, here are a few easy steps to follow to make sure you’re on the right track. Let’s start with fabric. Generally, I’d recommend silk. Not only will it deliver a lustrous, expensive sheen, but it’s a fabric which can be printed with intricate patterns and vibrant colours meaning it can easily amp up even the simplest of suiting.
But beware – don’t go too bold on the design front. While you want to add a pop of interest, you don’t want to pull too much focus. Go for vintage prints and colourways which err on subtle. You basically want it to look like it’s been passed down from your great grandfather even if it’s box-fresh.
A common misconception is that you need your pocket square to match your tie. Actually, in my opinion, it’s better when they don’t match. As long as the whole look works from a cohesive colour palette perspective, it gives your looks a more interesting finish if they’re different.
My top tip as a pro stylist: whenever you’re passing a charity shop or thrift store, dip into rifle through the accessories section. They often have a strong selection of pure silk pieces whose RRP would usually set you back much further.
Or, if you don’t have the time, simply choose one from our list of favourite brands below.
Reiss

Reiss was founded as a men's suiting label back in 1971, so it’s no wonder it’s still a strong choice for all things tailoring today. Its selection of squares, which come in silk or linen, spans various prints and colours so you’re covered no matter what the brief – and they’re all offered at a reasonable £38.
Huntsman

As the inspiration behind the comedy-spy blockbuster franchise Kingsman, Huntsman has become one of the most iconic stores on Savile Row. As you’d expect, the tailoring expert offers an elite selection of pocket squares.
From classic prints to block colours and painterly illustrations – one of which is of the store itself – these are premium options for those who are looking for luxury.
Turnbull & Asser

Established in 1885, Turnbull & Asser is a heritage tailor with 140 years of experience in the game. So, naturally, it’s one of the top pocket square retailers. Though there are a good few neutral options, this is the place to go if you’re after a bold colour – hot pink, lime green, and crimson red included.
Hermès

Hermès is the purveyor of luxury. Like the Maison’s leather goods (did someone say Birkin bag?), the menswear is some of the best in the business.
And, seeing as the brand’s known for silks, it’s no surprise the pocket squares are some of the most coveted on the market. Whichever you pick, it’s a generational investment which will be cherished for years.
Charles Tyrwhitt

For affordable tailoring on the high street - without compromising quality, Charles Tyrwhitt is your best bet. Like the suiting, the pocket squares balance good fabrics with strong design details for a finish that’s well worth the £25 price point.
Moss

You may remember Moss as Moss Bros but the British high street tailoring store has had a revamp, name included – and the menswear feels much stronger. Even the pocket squares feel elevated.
There are paisley options as well as simple textured styles and floral designs – and you can get pure silk designs for less than £15. A real bargain.
Eton

Though Eton is best known for its range of top-quality shirts, the pocket squares are just as good. This design, for instance, is essentially four in one, with a different colourway in each quarter.
It’s made from pure silk which you can tell is of the finest quality thanks to its delicately sheeny finish.
Sirplus

Sirplus is a responsible menswear label which creates its collections using deadstock, natural and organic fabrics. The brand’s pocket squares come in cool prints and stylish colourways – and they’ve all made their way onto my wishlist.
Drake’s

If you want to dress like JFK Jr. - and who doesn’t? - London-based label Drake’s should be on your radar. The entire collection is classic British elegance meets New York prep with the occasional sporty edge.
There’s suiting, casualwear, shirting and, of course, a great range of pocket squares. You can choose from plain styles with a contrast edge or vintage-inspired prints – either way, you’ll take your accessories game to the next level.
Mr. Porter

For those who like browsing a selection of brands at once, head to Mr. Porter. You’ll find pocket squares by Tom Ford, Favourbrook, Drake’s and Brunello Cucinelli, as well as the retailer’s own brand Mr P.
Paul Smith

Designer Paul Smith’s journey in fashion started in men’s tailoring, so it’s understandable why the brand offers such a strong collection of suiting and accompanying accessories today.
It’s the place to go for a bold design, whether you like a pop of bright colour or the iconic signature stripe.
