Emma Thompson: The UK is no different to Hollywood for black actors â weâve got a long way to go

Emma Thompson has claimed that itâs no better for black actors in the UK than it is in Hollywood.
Speaking at the Evening Standard British Film Awards, the acting veteran said that she feels the industry has âa long way to goâ when it came to diversity.
âI wouldnât say to any black actor or actress âyou must go to Britain because weâre so much better,ââ she told us.
âItâs not great anywhere to be perfectly frank. I think itâs very hard for jobbing actors here. I think weâve got a long way to go before we get that sorted.â

Speaking about the â#OscarsSoWhiteâ debate, which has divided Hollywood, the star added:
âThe Oscar membership is old white men â either you wait for them to die or kill them off slowly.â
Thompson, 56, picked up the Comedy Award for her role in The Legend of Barney Thomson at Sunday nightâs awards.
âItâs really nice because that part was one of my favourite things Iâve ever done. It was a real thrill. Very surprised actually.â
Collecting her award on stage, the actress paid tribute late friend Alan Rickman.
âHe always predicted I would end up looking like my mother after a lifetime of Guinness, fish suppers and untipped Players. So thank you,â she said.
