Maisie Williams on Doctor Who: Idris Elba should be the next Doctor – if not I’ll do it

Maisie Williams has backed Idris Elba to be the next Doctor, although she’d also be keen to take on the role.

The actress, 18, who was named this year’s Rising star at the Evening Standard British Film Awards, thinks that it would be ‘cool’ to take over from Peter Capaldi but is unfortunately tied up with other projects.

“Yes it would be cool but right now I’m locked into some other things. I think a female doctor would be incredible,” she told us at Sunday’s ceremony.

“I think a black doctor would be incredible. I’m all for Idris Elba – but if not I’ll take it for the team and do it!”

Speaking about her role in The Falling compared to playing Arya Stark in Game of Thrones, she said:

“This role was a character I’ve never been seen in before and something that Carol [Morley] saw in me and I knew that this was a character I identified with heavily.

“I was the ratty tomboy who wields swords and so it’s lovely for someone to see me be an introvert and then to be awarded this then maybe I should play more introverted roles.”

Williams has appeared in a number of Doctor Who episodes, appearing alongside Capaldi as Ashildr.
