Chris Lilley has revealed that his infamous character Mr G is set to return.

The Australian comedian, 50, has been teasing that the drama teacher might be back on Instagram, but today he confirmed the news with a short Instagram reel.

It is unknown in what format the Summer Heights High character will return, as the video - featuring Mr G’s pink yoga ball - simply said that Mr G was back.

Lilley has a cult following in the UK thanks to the popularity of the high school documentary send-up and spin-off, Ja'mie: Private School Girl, in which he plays multiple characters.

“OMG YES! Will he finally get his arena spectacular?” one fan asked.

Another joked: “Coffee coffee before we teach teachy.”

And another referenced the show asking: “Where have you bloody been?”

Another added: “This is the news I wanted. Thank you.”

Back in 2019, Lilley answered on Reddit that he would happily bring back Mr G for his own series, saying: “Yeah probs. They’ll all come back eventually.’”

However, Mr G might return in audio format - as the comedian has launched podcasts featuring characters Jana Melhoopen-Jonks and Ja’mie King in recent years.

Lilley has been absent from TV screens for the last five years, since Netflix seriesLunatics.

The mockumentary series caused controversy, with Lilley being accused of cultural appropriation for his character Jana, a South African “lesbian Pet Psychic to the Stars”.

The show’s producer Laura Waters later claimed in a tweet the character wasn’t a woman of colour.

“Correcting some confusion – in the new show Lunatics, Chris Lilley is not portraying a woman of colour. When the series is released you will see that Jana is a white woman with huge 70s-style curly hair,” she said.

Speaking about his style of comedy, Lilley told The Weekend Australian in 2019: “I'm not trying to do the thing that is trendy at the moment.”

In 2020, Netflix pulled a number of Lilley’s shows in Australia and New Zealand, amid controversy about his past portrayal of characters using blackface and brownface.

The London Standard has contacted a representative of Chris Lilley for comment.
