The New England Patriots have now outscored opponents 76-3 through the first fortnight of the new NFL season after thrashing the hapless Miami Dolphins 43-0 on Sunday.

Disaster struck both the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers, with veteran quarterbacks Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger struck down by injury in respective defeats to the Los Angeles Rams (27-9) and Seattle Seahawks (28-26).

Brees is expected to miss around six weeks with a torn ligament in his right thumb as Sean Payton prepares to turn to some combination of Teddy Bridgewater and Taysom Hill, while the Steelers - now 0-2 after being brushed aside by the Patriots in week one - will now be marshalled by second-year signal-caller Mason Rudolph.

Meanwhile, Dak Prescott continued to thrive in Kellen Moore's new-look, dynamic offense as the Dallas Cowboys recovered from a slow start to defeat NFC East rivals the Washington Redskins 31-21, moving to 2-0 for the first time since 2015.

They have the early edge in that division after the much-fancied Philadelphia Eagles were bested 24-20 by the Atlanta Falcons thanks to a huge late play from Julio Jones on Sunday Night Football.

The New York Giants are making the switch from Eli Manning to rookie Daniel Jones after a second straight loss at the hands of Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills, who can claim state bragging rights after back-to-back wins at MetLife Stadium.

Reports suggest that star cornerback Jalen Ramsey wants out of Jacksonville after a sideline dispute with head coach Doug Marrone during a narrow 13-12 loss to divisional rivals the Houston Texans in which rookie Jaguars QB Gardner Minshew II produced some late heroics before running back Leonard Fournette was stopped just shy of the goal line on a bold two-point conversion attempt.

Optimistic thoughts about the Cincinnati Bengals were quickly washed away by a 41-17 home rout by the San Francisco 49ers, while Lamar Jackson had another big day in a closer-than-expected 23-17 win for the Baltimore Ravens over the Arizona Cardinals, for whom No1 pick Kyler Murray threw for 349 yards.

The Green Bay Packers made a quick start in their NFC North clash against the Minnesota Vikings and eventually clung on for a 21-16 triumph, Eddy Pineiro's last-gasp 53-yard field goal gave the Chicago Bears a tight 16-14 victory over a Denver Broncos team managed by former defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and a woeful late interception from Philip Rivers cost the Los Angeles Chargers dearly in a 13-10 reverse to the Detroit Lions.

The Indianapolis Colts continued their excellent run against the Tennessee Titans in the AFC South, leaving Nashville with a 19-17 win on an emotional day when the home team retired the jersey numbers of Steve McNair and Eddie George.

Thursday night saw the Carolina Panthers slump to 0-2 with a surprise 20-14 defeat by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Charlotte, while on Monday the reeling and injury-plagued New York Jets were beaten 23-3 by the Cleveland Browns.

Headline summer arrival Odell Beckham Jr finished with six catches for 161 yards and a touchdown in that game.
