Layar Reality Browser, Augmented Reality Makes A Splash: Android App Review

App Name:Full name of the app/rom and the company who makes the AppLayar Reality Browser, by Layar.com

Description:(From the maker’s Website):The official app/rom description and what the app/rom does. The Layar Reality Browser shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top of the real world as seen through the camera of your mobile phone. This technology is called Augmented Reality. We augment the real world as seen through your mobile phone, based on your location.

How it works:The idea is simple: Layar works by using a combination of the mobile phone’s camera, compass and GPS data to identify the user’s location and field of view, retrieve data based on those geographical coordinates, and overlay that data over the camera view.

How to use the app and the functions and the options.

Opinion:Personal opinion of the app and how you use it.The Layar Reality Browser (wow, that’s a mouthful!) can be both a great utility to find somethingto eat, drink, or have fun with, but also, and more importantly, it’s a great way to show off the capabilities of your phone to your friends. And I mean show off in the greatest extent of the term.

What Layar does is superimpose icons for food or fun over the view through your phone‘s camera. Point up the street and see what there is, or go the other way to see if there’s something more interesting.

Not only does Layar give you the skinny on local food choices, but there‘s a ton of free and paid “layers” that can get you the weather, the local Wiki, You Tube and even Space Invaders! Layar will bring out the inner geek in you faster than an Intel i7 can calculate your GPA.

There is way too much in Layar to fully give it justice in a short review like this, so take it for a spin and see where it will lead you. Chances are you‘ll find something new in your town or some neat place hiding, non-descript like, that will become your new hauntingground.

Ratings :

It’s augmented reality. Really.
