The good news for all you Droid owners out there: You’re getting the Android 2.2 FroYo update you’ve been waiting for. The bad news? You won’t be getting two of the most requested features for your phone: tethering, and the ability to use the phone as a WiFi hotspot. Today, Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney confirmed to phonescoop the two features, which are natively suppoted by Android 2.2, will not make the final cut. This is due to the fact, she says, “The Droid by Motorola doesn’t have [the] hardware to support a Mobile Hotspot. With tethering there is no Connection on the PC side that will allow you to tether the device so the answer is that option isn’t part of this update.”
Verizon does provide Droid users with a list of new features and enhancements the FroYo 2.2 software update will include in a nice two-page pdf document. Droid owners should expect:
- Improved Web browsing with Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 beta for
Android, now available for download via Market. - Camera’s video mode now uses LED flash, and on-screen buttons
make it easy to control zoom, white balance, focus, exposure, and
geo-tagging. - Enhanced audio quality.
Verizon will push the OTA updates to a small number of users at first to ensure everything is working properly, and then update Droids in phases throughout this week. The push should be completed by the weekend.
