The Droid 2 vs. The Original Droid

We have finally uncovered, “officially”, the 2nd Generation of the Droid. The Droid 2 launches August 12th, with pre-sales on the 11th, as the successor of the original Motorola Droid which started last November. Appearance wise the Droid 2 has a silver finish while the Droid has a black body finish. (You can get a closer look at the Droid 2’s design at Verizon’s 360-degree demo page.) The only other difference appearance wise is the slide out keyboard which which bigger since it doesn’t have the directional pad that it’s predecessor has. Appearance isn’t where these devices really differ the significance of the differences are internally in the phone.  The Droid 2 packs a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM, giving it considerably more power than its older brother’s 550MHz chip/256MB RAM combination. In the aspects of storage, the Droid 2 has a respectable 8GB of internal space. The original Motorola Droid is limited to a relatively puny 256MB internally. The Droid 2 ships with Android 2.2 already preloaded with Adobe Flash. The first Droid is receiving its Android 2.2 upgrade right now, and it looks like it may be another few weeks before Flash support is enabled.  The Droid 2 includes support for a Wi-Fi hotspot functionality. This feature can be activated for an extra $20 a month. The original Droid, due to apparent limitations, does not have this option, but it can be tethered through USB.
