That’s Rovio Mobile’s twitter page above, maker of the smash-hit game Angry Birds. How much of a smash is it? The free Android version went live on Friday at GetJar.com, the world’s second largest app store (after iTunes). GetJar got the exclusive through a deal with Glu Mobile, where GetJar provides free, no-ad versions of premium games for two weeks.
Oh yes, and it’s been downloaded one million times.Yes, I am going to say that again. One million downloads of this game. In one day.
Angry Birds also appeared this weekend on the Android Market as a free version with ads (a Lite version has been available). Needless to say, in just one day it is also the number one free game on the Market, with over 250,000 downloads and more than 12,000 ratings (most of them five stars). We don’t know how many more than 250,000 because that’s the biggest number the Market uses to rank downloads.
And on GetJar, where Angry Birds first appeared? The new Android version crashed their servers. This is a site that usually handles 3 million total downloads a day, and the Android release suddenly led to 8 to 10 times their usual number of users.
Rovio promises a pay version with more levels is coming to the Market, and there are plenty of new levels in the works for the free versions too. The company wants to support more devices before releasing the paid app, which is why it isn’t available yet. An official tweet said to keep your eyes out for new surprises “next week.” I hope that means this week.
Angry Birds had such a terrific surge of support on Android because it’s been available as a paid app on the iPhone, where it has sold 7 million copies. Then again, it is a very addicting game.
