When it comes to the Camera war Sony isn’t playing around, recently the Altek Leo was released with the beastly 14MP camera. However, Sony has something to top that, their 16MP Exmor R-based CMOS sensor will be hitting devices sometime next year but it’s already picking up quite the buzz. Why? Well, not only is it a 16MP camera (come on its 16 whole megabytes) but, it also captures video in 1080p HD (nuff said!). It uses back-illumination for reducing image noice and records at 30 FPS.

“IMX081PQ” is world’s first*1 type 1/2.8 back-illuminated CMOS image sensor which realizes 16.41 effective megapixel resolution, and adopts the industry’s smallest*1 unit pixel size of 1.12μm achieved by the fine pixel fabrication process technology. In theory, when a unit pixel size is made smaller, there are also some issues such as color mixture among smaller unit pixels. Sony solved this problem by implementing a unique formation of photo diodes optimally designed for fine pixel structure to realize a CMOS image sensor with high resolution, high sensitivity and low noise.
So you have to wonder if the size of the camera itself will be a problem for slimmer devices. Sony has addressed this problem by offering a 8.13MP which is small enough to fit into the more slimmer devices. The 8.13MP will be offered to manufactures starting this upcoming January.
