Microsoft Windows Mobile has been around for a very long time. With their newest OS (Windows Phone 7) out, it’s a tough market to catch on. According to MobilesPlease, Microsoft’s latest Windows Phone 7 (WP7) is selling below expectations. Android phones are thrashing WP7 in terms of sales with a 15:1 margin.
MobilesPlease also mentioned in their blog that even Symbian 3 is surpassing WP7, with figures showing that ratio is 3:1. This could be a problem for Microsoft as all the sales of Symbian 3 are only through Nokia N8 handsets. Although the figures are supplied by one retailer; not for the whole market. MobilesPlease just deals with comparisons of prices of phones with/without packages with contracts. But other major retailers such as Carphone Warehouse do not have WP7 on display in some areas. The retailers are saying that phones such as Blackberry, HTC’s Android and the iPhone are much preferred to WP7.
Microsoft is trying to have a different approach towards the interaction between the customer and WP7. Their late entry to the market is causing them to deal with major competition. Since Microsoft does not yet have full-functionality handsets in its line-up, it is still trying to stay around. As per figures provided by MobilesPlease.co.uk, WP7 started slow. They had 3% accounting for their smartphone sales and nearly 2% of overall sales through the retailer and their partner sites which share the same data feed.
Due to lack of meeting demand and support of retailers impressing the customers, this could cause a major setback to Microsoft in the smartphone regime. As the holiday season is coming soon, Microsoft has less time to show their enthusiasm and catch on with its competitors. Hopes are all that is left while Android sales are advancing like no other with their newest flagship Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread) almost ready to roll.
