More than a year ago, Rogers CEO and president Nadir Mohamed, may have hinted on the future of providing services to the customer. Mohamed spoke of three models that were possible for the carrier to remain relevant when dealing with services to the customers. In the third model, he describes an application center that competes with Apple, Rim, and Android platforms. Without hinting that they were planning such an “application center” Rogers has now dived into the app world with Rogers Catalyst.
Rogers released Rogers Catalyst Beta to app developers creating an App Store of their own. Signing up is free and a number of resources are available to begin developing apps immediately. Rogers will make available Service APIs such as SMS, location-based, and carrier billing (pre-paid and instant payments). They promise faster approval of apps and collaboration with the developers to help create quality apps for the Canadian carrier. For those wanting to learn more, a Developer Camp is being given later on in the month, as well as other events in the coming weeks, throughout Canada.
