Motorola has filed a trademark for the name Stadia, for a new smartphone. For this device Motorola has used the description as follows: “Handheld game device in the nature of hand-held units for playing electronic games for use with external display screen or monitor.”
There’s also a reference for an “Electronic non-medical portable device for measuring, storing, transferring and synchronizing an individual’s physical exercise and activity levels including date, time, heart rate, global positioning, direction, distance, altitude, speed, distance, calories and temperature.”
Motorola may want to make a game and fitness-oriented phone that hopefully will also have a Tegra 2 chip inside. Will this be competition to Sony’s upcoming Playstation Phone? I think so, but in a very different way, and I’d say a big way.
I don’t really like the idea of the Playstation Phone. I’m sure a lot of people will disagree with me, especially those who have used a PSP or a Nintendo DS before, but I don’t think that sort of thing will have a great appeal when it appears – especially if it will only have a 1 GHz Snapdragon chip as rumored. It will quickly fall behind in technology, and people will forget about it. Plus it will only have games that work specifically made for that device, probably because they’ll have to support the physical controllers, instead of the touchscreen.
But I think mobile gaming can be much better and much more mainstream than that, and also work the same on all Android phone. Just imagine that your Android games could be played on your TV, using your phone as the controller. Wouldn’t that be an amazing experience? I’ve been thinking about this ever since Google TV was announced. Google TV coupled with an Android phone, could give you a very “console” like experience. Once Google TV supports 3rd party apps, you’ll be able to play Android games that look great (Unreal 3 visuals) on your TV, especially when apps will get HD like 1280 x 800 resolution support.
