The update train is rolling for the original Motorola Droid as well as the Droid X. This update to Android 2.2.1 is happening now and it may be the last one till Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) comes to the little smartphone that could. The update that was supposed to start at midnight is being reported by some Droid X users to not have happened. One report says this was caused by some installation problems, 3G connection issues after the update, and problems downloading the new Madden NFL game included in this update. This is of course NOT official, so take it for what it’s worth. Another report says the update was there for anyone who wanted it and then disappeared very quickly.
Verizon has made the Madden NFL game mentioned above permanent, at least to those of you that haven’t rooted your Droid. This seems to be a recurring thing with VZW, un-removable bloatware. This is something we saw with the Fascinate and BING, and the Android community was not happy. To add insult to injury, to upgrade to the full version of Madden NFL it’s going to set you back $9.99.
Some of the good points to this update are: Improvements to the overall performance and stability, improvements to music player and other audio, more improvements to Microsoft Exchange, Visual Voice Mail has some improvements too, and many more. For a full change list and for instructions on how to update your Droid check VZW support. If you have received your update for either Droid, drop us a comment and let us know how it went or how it runs.
(UPDATE) Seems I have a confirmation that the Droid X 2.2.1 update is having problems. A tipster very close to me is in a test group and their update came late last night and failed to install. When they checked the boards, many of the Droid X testers had the same failure. If you’re angry about not getting the update on your Droid X, you should prolly thank the brave souls that tested it (my source included) that it was caught there first.
