The much hyped Sony Ericsson Playstation Phone, said to be released with Android 2.3(Gingerbread), now has a new rumored release date for March of next year. This latest bit of gossip comes from ITProPortal, who’s source within the company confirmed the device to be launched at that time, also saying it would appear at Cebit 2011 in Germany, which is a global technology conference taking place the first week of March 2011. Prior to the Cebit show, the Playstation Phone is supposed to show up at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona taking place in February 2011.
The time frames for the tech shows do sound in line for a release, but we all know how these rumors go. The release of the Android 2.3 SDK(software development kit) adds a little more convincing that the device might actually be capable and ready by that March date. Gaming on phones has never been quite as questionable until this device. Now we just have to wait and see if the Sony Playstation brand really can deliver and merge Android phone capabilities with advanced gaming on the brand new OS.
Will the phone live up to the hype or die of overexposure and under achieving features? Personally being a home console fan, with a Sony Playstation 3, I don’t see the need for this device. Games are just better on a big screen, I know I’m not alone on that thought. Sony will really need to be unique and push the tech forward for this to be a winner.
