When you think about Android, and Sony, the first thing that comes to mind is the much talked about Playstation Phone, scheduled to drop early next year. While it might be Sony Ericsson’s future “it” device, you can’t always rule out the old, in particular the Xperia X10. The left for dead device has jumped back into the spotlight due in part to an Android 2.3(Gingerbread) preview ROM somehow making its way on board. The Gingerbread ROM that has shown up for the device is not complete in any way, but does offer a preview of sorts, of what the Gingerbread update offers. It is built off the official 2.3 SDK and not the actual Android OS source code.
The Xperia X10 hasn’t seen such a warm reception, considering it is still a few operating system updates behind the rest of the world. Sony is having problems updating the device to Android 2.1 Eclair. Those update issues, pre-Froyo, have been the downfall of the X10, and the main reason it probably wont see Gingerbread in the near future. Maybe if it somehow updates its way to 2.2 Froyo, there could be a glimmer of hope, but don’t count on it.
If you happen to be a lucky X10 owner with the itch to try the preview ROM out, you can follow the XDA thread link for the install instructions, and check out the video below for a peek.
