The latest rumor surrounding the next Android version, 2.4 or 3.0 (Honeycomb) could affect the future of the current phones/tablets out there. According to Bobby Cha, director of Enspert, a Korean electronics company, there will be hardware requirements for Honeycomb, in order to “run properly.” Honeycomb will require a higher resolution display of at least 1280 x 720 and running at least a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor.
If turns out to be true, then the current flood of tablets with the bare minimum running Android 1.6 won’t see Honeycomb. Even newer tablets, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, might be left out without an update. This could end up being a good thing for Android as it helps with the ever-decreasing fragmentation issue seen with Android. But, if you recently bought a tablet, thinking you will get the next Android version, you might want to start looking for a newer tablet. This is only a rumor for now, so the only thing to wait for is Google to confirm or deny it.
