Meizu is certainly starting off the new year right! Massive crowds formed a considerable line outside two stores in Shenzhen, China on the first day of 2011 despite the cold. Some people arrived as early as 8 pm New Years Eve, then many more started arriving at 6 am and more yet by 8 am New Years Day. Everyone there waiting to get their hands on the new Meizu M9 smartphone, which is very similar to the iPhone 4.
This is a good sign that Android may dominate 2011 throughout the world, as Android Froyo 2.2 OS is running this device. Jack Wong, CEO of Meizu had earlier reported the number of available devices would be plentiful, but that appeared to go unnoticed judging by the number of anxious people that gathered.
There was no mention of the exact number of M9’s available, but I’m sure it must have been in the thousands. This phone is priced at $379 US for 8 GB, and $499 US for the 16 GB device. Meizu has stores in 28 other provinces of China, so I’m sure they are all hoping to do as well.
The iPhone look-a-like shows off a 3.5 inch 960 x 640 touchscreen, 1 GHz processor, 5 mega-pixel camera with 720 HD video recording capability, WiFi (b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, GPS, and sensors composed of ambient light, gravity and proximity.
Does this leave you wanting a M9? We’ll have to see if Meizu will bring this phone to the US market, or just stay in China, and other countries within Asia.
