I remember it like yesterday when LG had an exciting tablet called the G Slate coming to T-Mobile in the US. It was yesterday, before LG’s new announcement, that we thought this. At the Mobile World Conference, LG just announced that the tablet formerly known as G Slate will now be known as Optimus Pad.
The LG Optimus Pad will be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. It will have the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset. So far, it may seem like the other Honeycomb tablets that we know about. So far, you would be correct, but it differentiates itself from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola XOOM in a few ways. To begin with, it is smaller. This is the first nine-inch tablet we have seen (8.9 inch to be precise). LG claims that this is the perfect compromise: it allows for a more comprehensive multimedia experience than the seven-inch Galaxy Tab, but is able to fit in one hand, unlike the 10 inch iPad. However, both intomobile and androidcentral reported that this was not really true. Instead, it felt a little too big to be operated with one hand.
The other big change from our Motorola and Samsung friends is the ability to take pictures and shoot video in 3D. This device has two 5 MP cameras, allowing you to record up to 720p in 3D. You are able to watch 1080p, but unfortunately it can’t record such a high resolution (it would be worse though if you could record the high-resolution but not watch it!). You are able to send those videos over to your LG Optimus 3D or 3D-enabled TV if you have one of those.
Interestingly enough, it does not seem like any of the Honeycomb tablets have any UI differences, as this was one of the big differentiators in handsets.
Both sites were kind enough to post some pics and videos of them playing with the Optimus Pad, and both state that there seems to be very little lag- a good sign for a pre-production unit.
