Motorola is at it once again with their anti-developer policy of locking the bootloader on the new Atrix 4G that was released February 22nd (yesterday). Now, personally, I don’t understand why they even do this; the average consumer probably won’t even try to root their phone, so what’s it really “protecting”?
This is the same method they used on the Droid X and Droid 2 that had plenty of users up in arms. But since those two phones have been released, they both have had custom ROMs that can be loaded onto them anyways.
But, back to the Atrix; the everyday user probably won’t even need root access (some may not even know what it means), but to the people who like to tinker with the products they spend their money on, this is just another roadblock that Motorola probably doesn’t even need to add to their devices. It may even deter some people from buying it, at least until the development community has found away around it like they have in the past. And given the magnitude of this phone, we’ll probably see custom ROMs turning up sooner than later especially since root access has already been gained.
What do you guys think? Will this lead you to reconsider purchasing this beast of a phone? Even if it is just to wait until custom ROMs start to turn up?
