The Android Honeycomb Tablet Race is starting to look more like a Battle Royale with another big name, Toshiba, showing off their contender, The Toshiba Tablet.
This Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) Tablet, featuring the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, has a 10.1 inch (1280 x 800) capacitive multi-touch screen, capable of 720p High Definition video playback, set at a 16:10 display ratio. The screen is also an Adaptive Display meaning it automatically adjusts the brightness, contrast and color saturation, using its ambient light sensor, to ensure that it is visible in- or out-doors. And it just keeps getting better with Toshiba’s new Resolution+ Video Enhancement Technology.
The Toshiba Tablet is just 0.6 inches thin, yet contains not only a Full-Sized HDMI port with 1080p HD output, but also a Full-Sized USB 2.0 and mini-USB port, a headphone jack, the biggest microphone I have ever seen on a portable device, stereo speakers enhanced by SRS Surround, a dedicated docking port on the left side between the speakers, and has several colors of non-slip rear covers available to fit your style.
Toshiba has elected to keep the dedicated Home, Menu, Back, and Search buttons on the front of the device. The volume, and combination power/screen orientation lock have all been moved to the right side, in a nice split-rocker setup, so they are easily accessed when docked. Also on the right side is the ToshiTab’s SD Card slot which was once again left Full-Sized.
The front-facing Camera is a full 2.0 megapixels and the rear-facing, while there is no flash, is 5.0 MP. Other specs include the Swype keyboard software, and haptic feedback, motion sensors (although six-axis and/or gyroscope has not been confirmed), GPS & compass, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and Adobe Flash 10.1.
Even though it doesn’t offer 3G, which is why most Android phones offer tethering, I am glad that a manufacturer has realized many of us have and want to use our flash drives, digital cameras, camcorders, external hard drives, and TVs with a tablet without having to buy any extra cables and adapters, or just making the choice not to use our old devices.
