The iPad 2 Makes the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Inadequate?

Apple presented the iPad 2 to the world just a few days ago and already Samsung states they are now rethinking parts of their recently announced Galaxy Tab 10.1. Yes, the iPad 2 is thinner and lighter at the same 10.1″ screen size, but the key factor in the equation is pricing and for $499 contract free Apple is definitely sitting pretty at this point.

Does Samsung Need To Further Delay The Galaxy Tab To Compete?

If you ask Samsung the answer in short is yes. In the words of Samsung executive VP Lee Don-Joo, they need to look more closely at their own hardware and pricing model in order to “improve the parts that are inadequate.” Samsung cannot compete with Apple in terms of production quantity and price and may have to forgo most or all of their profits to price the Galaxy Tab competitively. We recently detailed the Galaxy Tab, and noted it felt light and portable that was before Steve Jobs threw a wrench in Samsung’s plans.

Galaxy Tab VS. iPad 2 The Tale Of The Tape

The Galaxy Tab is a nice piece of hardware it weigh’s just 1.23 pounds its running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. It is powered by the dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 running at 1 Ghz and you will have the option to choose from 16GB or 32GB of storage. To go along with an 8 megapixel rear camera that can shoot 1080p video and a 2 megapixel front facing camera.

I know I broke the Android cardinal rule and posted pictures of an Apple device but its a one time deal I promise. The iPad however in typical Apple fashion is super sleek and thin. Its dual core and the specs for both devices are rather similar. The point I’m trying to hammer home is exactly how thin it is, it’s even thinner than the previous thinnest smartphone the iPhone 4.

Should Samsung And The Galaxy Tab Be Worried?

I’m clearly not going to compare platforms as we know how that would end up. Samsung feels that the thinner, sleeker and cheaper iPad needs some stiffer competition however. I applaud them for their honesty and desire to put out the best tablet possible.

How do you guys take this move on their part? Ultimately it means the price war is on and hopefully we will see the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 come in at the $499 as well, and  pressure Motorola and LG to do the same. Should we be worried?
