Teamwin's Kernel Manager makes Kernel Flashing Simple

Kernel Developers have a new way to Distribute their Work

Have you ever thought how cool it would be to have a fast way to flash new kernels on your rooted device with a custom ROM without having to boot into recovery, go through the whole painstaking process of flashing, wiping caches and rebooting? This is true especially if you’re looking for the right kernel to suit the new custom ROM your rocking.

Well XDA developers TeamWin has an answer for flash-aholics like me. Kernel Manager is a new app recently released to the Android Market. I had the pleasure of speaking with the developer responsible for this very cool app and got some feedback on his vision for Kernel Manager and the things they would like to see happen with it.

Collaborate and Easily Share Kernels with Kernel Manager

According to TeamWin developer Shinzul, creator of Kernel Manager:

“We hope to create an environment where all developers can collaborate and easily share their kernels.  We just want to make it easy for people to find kernels, and for kernel developers to reach their audience .”

TeamWin designer Shift is responsible for the app’s graphics and Kevank is the guy “behind the curtain,” handling all back-end server and database efforts. If you are a kernel developer and want to talk with these guys you can visit them at freenode IRC #kernel-manager.

Kernel Manager can Flash Kernels without using Recovery

The app makes this it extraordinarily simple to flash kernels to your handset. Developers register an account with TeamWin and then are able to submit their kernels at http://kernels.teamw.in. After that, the kernel shows up in a list on the app’s simple interface. If you want a kernel, you simple choose to flash it and then Kernel Manager goes to work: downloading the chosen kernel, automatically flashing, clearing the device’s caches and rebooting it.

Supported Kernels

The list of supported devices is growing too. Kernel developer Netarchy stated that “It’s an easier way for people who want to use custom kernels, but don’t want to mess around with recovery.” That is exactly what the app does and it does it well.

You can pick up Kernel Manager on the Android Market in both free ad-supported and paid ad-free versions. The paid package includes a filtering option which is worth the coin ($3.99) if you love kernels, because the list of them is sure to grow. I’m thinking Kernel Manager will soon be the preferred way for people to get their popcorn fix. Cyanogen mod kernels for all devices will be automatically updated in the pro version of the app. All versions will support Netarchy’s many works as well as the brand new Tiamat kernels to name a few. Give it a spin and let me know what you think of Kernel Manager in the comments.
