Here it is, less than a week after the Nexus S update. Our beloved Nexus One is getting the latest Gingerbread update, Android 2.3.4. I’m sure it contains a few bugfixes and minor updates, but most notable is what’s missing: video chat. I know, I know it’s hardly surprising given the N1’s lack of a front facing camera, and Google did say that video chat in Google Talk would be coming to the Nexus S first, even though 2.3.4 was about to roll out to both Nexus (Nexi?), old and new.
Anyway, the update is currently rolling out via OTA, but if patience isn’t your strong suit, we’ve got you covered. Here are all the instructions you need to download and install the update DIY-style.
- Download the update from here.
- Rename the file to update.zip. Note that if you’re using Windows, just rename it to “update” (no quotes, of course) because it’s already a zipped file.
- Copy the update.zip file onto your microSD card.
- With your Nexus One off, hold down the trackball and press the power button.
- You’ll be booted into a white screen with three Android robots on skateboards. Select “Bootloader.”
- On the next screen, select “Recovery.”
- Your phone will reboot, giving you a picture of the Android robot and an exclamation point inside a triangle.
- Now press the power button and volume up button at the same time. It could take a couple of tries.
- Now (using the trackball this time) choose “Apply sdcard:update.zip” and let things run their course.
