There have been many rumors about the Galaxy S3 since late last year, especially about its release date. We keep going back and forth with the date, and the latest rumors seems to say the next-gen Galaxy S phone will be released as soon as next month. It seems Samsung’s want to reschedule the roll-out from May to April, because they are ready to have an aggressive promotion for all their products in China.
But that shouldn’t be the only reason. The HTC One X will also be available in April, and some users were already considering getting it because they didn’t know how long they will have to wait for the Galaxy S3, and their contracts are about to expire or have already expired. Releasing the Galaxy S3 for a showdown with the One X is a very smart move for Samsung, indeed.
We’ve also gotten some leaked specs, that may or may not be real:
- quad core 1.5 Ghz processor (possibly the Exynos 4412)
- 4.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus HD display with 1280×720 resolution
- 32 GB of internal storage
- 1 GB of RAM
- 12 MP rear camera
- 1.3 MP front-camera
- 1080p video recording at 60 FPS (a first on mobile cameras)
My favorite features of this new devices, besides the processor (although it remains to be seen how well it compares to others), are first the Super AMOLED Plus display, meaning it has no Pentile Matrix, but the full RGB Matrix, with its 720 display (wouldn’t buy any less at this point).
Second, I like that it has a 12 MP camera, and while we shouldn’t put too much focus on megapixels alone, I’m guessing it also means it will take much better pictures in general. I’m hoping it will have a larger sensor, too. I don’t know why camera phones still have such tiny sensors today.
Third, the 1080p@60fps seems pretty exciting, and I’m sure it will be a big marketing win for the Galaxy S3, not only because it’s the first one to have it, but also because it will be the only one to have it for quite a while. I’m still not sure about the design, and we’ll have to see it first, but I’m hoping they used something a lot more solid than just plastic this time around.
There’s no doubt that the device will come with Android 4.0, and probably Touchwiz 4.5 or 5.0.
