Samsung is supposed to start mass-producing their killer Cortex A15-based Exynos 5 chip this quarter, and in a few months we might be able to see the first ever product with a Cortex A15 chip as well. That would be at least 6 months before anyone else has one, whether that’s TI, Apple or others, and it would give a huge advantage in terms of performance over the competition.
The 2 Ghz Exynos 5 is supposed to be about twice as fast as a dual core 1.5 Ghz Cortex A9 chip, and have twice as much memory bandwidth of up to 12.8 Gbps as well. That means this chip should also come with DDR3 RAM of 1600 Mhz in most cases, and it should be a big advantage for 3D games as well, since memory bandwidth has been the bottlneck for advanced 3D graphics lately.
Speaking of 3D graphics, the Exynos 5 also comes with a surprise, and that is the very powerful Mali T-604 GPU, a quad core GPU (just like Mali 400) based on a the new Midgard architecture, and it promises a 400% improvement in performance over the Mali400 that we found in Galaxy S2. But there’s another advantage to this GPU – it means it will also be able to power ultra-high resolutions, like the rumored 2560×1600 resolution for that mythical Galaxy Tab 11.6.
Some of us are hoping that Samsung will even delay the Galaxy S3 launch, to put this Exynos 5 inside it. And they might actually do it, if the rumor that it will have a 1080p display is true. I find it hard to believe that they would put such a high resolution on a device with Mali 400 or even the improved Mali 400 in the quad core Exynos 4412 chip. It would need something like the Mali T604 to support that resolution in an efficient way.
Ultimately we’ll take what we can get, and we should just be thankful that we’ll see any Cortex A15 device many months before the others are able to bring it to the market.
