Sony has just announced a major restructuring of their company and 10,000 job cuts. Things are clearly not going so well for Sony right now. They’ve been carried by their brand alone mostly over the past few years. I don’t think the last top executives were that good. They need to focus again on cost efficiency, and using the best materials and hardware on the market. This why cost efficiency is important, because they need to sell them at an affordable price as well compared to the competition.
Sony still has an edge in design, though, but they’ve lost their mojo as manufacturers, and not their products are thick, lower specced and expensive. A good product is not lazily made, even one that has a good design. Maybe all these job cuts and some fat-shaving will do Sony some good, and help them focus on what’s really important for the company’s future.
The new Sony smartwatch can be a hint of innovative products that will come from Sony. The price doesn’t seem that much at $150, for such a product, but I’m still concerned about the battery life. The display is OLED, but that still means that the battery could run out within a day or two. That means owners of such watch would have to get used to charging it often, not to mention that it’s one more device that you have to remember to charge besides your smartphone and tablet.
The smartwatch doesn’t have its own Internet connection, but it’s able to pull updates from your Android smartphone through Bluetooth. It comes with its own black wristband, but you can purchase a different color wristband for $20. You can order the smartwatch from Sony’s online store right now.
