The patent war continues… Last December, Apple won a patent suit against HTC, banning the importation of HTC Android devices. The ITC determined that Android’s messaging application and and web browser infringed upon Apple patent #5,946,647. This patent covers automatically converting phone numbers and email addresses into clickable links that open a menu of options, functions we are all accustomed too. The initial ban was delayed so HTC could code around Apple’s supposed patent infringement claims. HTC had originally claimed that the applications required only minimal UI changes and that the infringements would be removed from up and coming HTC Android devices in the US.
The US availability of the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE has been delayed due to a standard U.S. Customs review of shipments that is required after an ITC exclusion order. We believe we are in compliance with the ruling and HTC is working closely with Customs to secure approval. The HTC One X and HTC Evo 4G LTE have been received enthusiastically by customers and we appreciate their patience as we work to get these products into their hands as soon as possible.
The US Customs Office is now reviewing the HTC One X and HTC EVO 4G LTE to make sure that these devices are compliant, putting both of these flagship phones on hold for now. This news comes to light after recent reports of Sprint stores across the country opening early to sell the latest EVO and AT&T running out of their online stock of the One X. Sadly, HTC cannot do anything at this time but sit back and wait for the review to finish.
