Quad-core processors and chipsets are quickly becoming the standard for new smartphones and tablets. While dual-core was the standard for some time, we’re starting to see more quad-core chips make their way into phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S III and the HTC One X for example. A long time provider of chips for smartphones and tablets, Qualcomm, has been working on their new, higher performing quad-core chip, the Snapdragon S4 Pro.
Dubbed the APQ8064, this new mobile chip is pretty impressive and according to benchmarks, is a big improvement over the competition. Qualcomm showed off the chip in their developer tablet kit which will run $1300 and features said processor, 10.1 inch screen, 2GB RAM, and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Using Quadrant and AnTuTu, we get to see just how well the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro performs. The processor scored a massive 7698 in Quadrant, nearly reaching the limit of 8000. For comparison, the HTC One X scored 4906, ASUS Transformer Prime TF201 just over 4000, Samsung Galaxy S III 4454, and the Nexus 7 3501, all quad-core powered devices.
When it comes to dual-core powered devices, the Snapdragon S4 Pro was almost 3 times more powerful when compared to the Galaxy Nexus and others. All in all, very exciting data, especially when you consider the claim that the new processor will offer great battery life. In the meantime, NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chip isn’t the highest performing chip on the block so it looks like they’ve got their work cut out for ’em.
