Sony mobile (formerly known as Sony Ericsson) has been in tough times lately. Six months earlier they moved their headquarters from London, UK to Lund, Sweden and now they’re planning to relocate again. This time the destination being Sony’s hometown Tokyo, Japan. Even though this seems like a favorable move for Sony itself but unfortunately it isn’t much appealing to the people working at the Sweden HQ. The relocation is expected to take place on 1st October.
It is reported that Sony Mobile is considering slashing the workforce ranging from 100 to 1000 jobs out of nearly 3000 workheads. There are still no words on which functions of the Lund HQ will be moved to Japan or if the development teams will still stay in Lund. These will be decided in the coming months. Kunimasa Suzuki, CEO of Sony mobile said the following in a statement regarding the changes.
“We are accelerating the integration and convergence with the wider Sony group to continue enhancing our offerings, and a more focused and efficient operational structure will help to reduce Sony Mobile’s costs, enhance time to market efficiency and bring the business back to a place of strength.”
Looks like HTC is not the only company doing all the moving and slashing, it has been joined by Sony now. Several other OEMs are also facing difficult times except for the giants like Samsung and Apple, that are busy kicking each other in the nuts.
