Android 4.1 Jelly Bean launched a couple months back and debuted on the wonderful Nexus 7 tablet, a quad-core powerhouse. Since then, Android manufacturers have gotten their hands on the source code and over to their devices. Despite that, there are quite a few phones however that are launching with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, yet are being promised an upgrade to Jelly Bean at a later date.
For example, Motorola announced three new phones in the RAZR line yesterday and they’ll all have Ice Cream Sandwich for now with Jelly Bean coming by the end of the year. Even though it’s been just a few months, how is 4.1 Jelly Bean stacking up exactly? Well, it we’re going to be talking about one version of Android, we might as well refer to the current distribution a la the Android Developers website.
Here’s the whole breakdown…
- 2.3.3-2.3.7 Gingerbread: 57.2%
- 4.0.3-4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich: 20.8%
- 2.2 Froyo: 14%
- 2.1 Eclair: 3.7%
- 3.2 Honeycomb: 1.6%
- 4.1 Jelly Bean: 1.2%
- 3.1 Honeycomb: 0.5%
- 1.6 Donut: 0.4%
- 2.3-2.3.2 Gingerbread: 0.3%
- 1.5 Cupcake: 0.2%
- 4.0-4.0.2 Ice Cream Sandwich: 0.1%
It’s crazy to think that 2.1 Eclair, released in January of 2010, has three times more distribution than Jelly Bean. Still, it’s only been a matter of months and hopefully people using some of these much older versions of Android, get around to upgrading to something far better.
