A few days back we heard that Texas Instruments (a.k.a TI) was planning to move away from the production of chips for mobile market and looking to break into markets like robotics and automotive. The report also stated that it will halt the production of their highly anticipated OMAP 5 chipsets. However, Today Texas Instruments have made statement regarding their Wednesday’s announcement and clarified that they will still remain in the mobile market and deliver the OMAP 5 chipsets.
They will still tap the markets mentioned above but that doesn’t mean they will shut down the mobile chip making business. The work on the new OMAP m5 chipsets is still in progress and TI expects that the first products powered by OMAP 5 chips will hit the market in early 2013.
The plan to go into other markets is still better for TI as other chip makers like Qualcomm are hitting it very hard with latest processors and big companies like Apple and Samsung have decided to come up with home built chips for their devices, so there’s a little room for other companies like TI to make profit.
We are excited about the launch of the new OMAP 5 chipsets and the devices that will be powered by this beast. It features a Cortex A15 core that is quite powerful and something to keep an eye out for. Lets just hope the best for both the chip and the company behind it.
