Featured: Android Could Overtake Apple In Tablet Share, But It May Be Shortlived

For 2012, Android has had quite a fantastic year. With many awesome devices coming out and Google’s very own super affordable Nexus 7 tablet to hit the market, the platform as a whole has done very well. Even though 4.1 Jelly Bean hasn’t quite made its way to most devices just yet, it’s getting there.

Yesterday, we reported on a story regarding Android market share for both smartphones and tablets. To no surprise, the iPad still makes up for a large chunk of the market, however, it dropped from 81% to 52% in the past year. Android is holding steady at 48%. It seems that the bridge has been gapped pretty significantly.

A lot of this growth has to do with, well, for one, the massive popularity of tablets and two, the introduction of very affordable, adequately powered 7 inch tablets such as the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. With the holidays getting closer, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Android surpass the iPad in terms of market share for the first time ever.

With that said, it could be very shortlived. There’s been rumors surrounding Apple for quite some time that they’re going to be launching their very own 7 inch tablet. While some are calling BS, others who are just as qualified are saying it’s a big possibility. It’s already a neck and neck battle between the two platforms, but with an iPad Mini, the battle will get even more intense.

What do you think? Will Android finally beat out Apple in the tablet game?
