Featured: Could the Upcoming Nexus 10 Give the Retina Display a Tough Time?

It’s Tablet Time! All the big players are gearing up for launches of their tablet initiatives, with Microsoft launching their new Surface alongside Windows 8 come the end of the month and a rumored, magical, iPad Mini supposedly coming today it looks like the tablet space is going to be just as crowded as the smartphone space this holiday season. For some time now, the Retina Display has ruled the roost when it comes to screen technology on tablets and whilst the likes of ASUS and Acer will sell you a 10.1″ panel at 1920×1200 it’s still not quite good enough and quite frankly, we need something better to compete against the iPad “magic”.

Come October 29th Google will open the gates to their new “playground” and with it, apparently, is to come a Nexus 10. A Nexus tablet at the 10″ form factor with some pretty killer specs. Of course, this is just a rumor however if the Nexus 4 from LG is anything to go by this looks pretty certain. The tablet is rumored to be produced by Samsung and could well come with a quad-core version of the Exynos 5250 based on ARM’s Cortex-A15 chip as well as a stunning 2560×1600 panel. That sounds like a whole lot of screen and it certainly is, in fact, this is how it stacks up against the rest:

  • Surface RT – 1366 x 768, 148 PPI
  • Surface Pro – 1920 x 1080, 208 PPI
  • Apple iPad 3 – 2048 x 1536, 264 PPI
  • Google Nexus 10 – 2560 — 1600, 10.1″ – 299 PPI
This would not only best the iPad 3 but also blow away the Surface Pro and anything else in its wake. I can see Google and Samsung making a big deal of such powerful hardware. It would be good for Google to put another shot in the arm of Android on tablets as well as it’s no secret that apps for 10″ sized tablets have never been all that good. With a Nexus 10 looking so stunning – and at the right price – this could make developers notice the platform like never before.
