You know what they say about Samsung – if they can make it, they’ll make it. The South Korean company has demonstrated that they can make and ship devices with different screen sizes until the cows come home but, what’s becoming more and more confusing is their marketing strategy for these devices. It’s clear that they are trying to cast these phones out of the same mould that is the Galaxy S III but will all these variants be available in all markets? Just last week, Samsung officially unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S III Mini which not only comes with a questionable name but also a lot of what the Galaxy S III is in a smaller form and with a smaller price tag. We heard about the Galaxy Premier earlier in the year, carrying the model number of GT-i9260, suspiciously close to the Galaxy Nexus’ moniker of GT-i9250. The common belief was that this was to become a Galaxy Nexus Mk II of sorts to round out a handful of Nexus devices from a selection of manufacturers. However, it quickly transpired that the Premier was to become another Galaxy S III variant.
It’s recently been benchmarked and it looks to be pretty fast for a device that is essentially a Galaxy Nexus in a Galaxy S III costume. It’s been discovered by SamMobile that the Premier has been benchmarked in China and that it also got pretty good results for a dual-core device. It scored over 7736 in AnTuTu, which when compared to the Galaxy Nexus’ score of around 6300 seems quite good. Whilst there’s no official word on specs, this is what you can expect from the Galaxy Premier:
- 4.65″ Super AMOLED HD Display – from the Galaxy Nexus we presume
- An Exynos 4412 in dual-core
- Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as standard
- 1GB RAM
- 8MP rear-facing camera with 1.2mp front-facing
- 8 or 16GB of Storage and maybe room for a microSD
There are no official word on specs just now so we could well be clutching at straws however, if Samsung are hoping to launch this before Christmas hits then we should know more quite soon. What’s becoming a little unclear is Samsung’s strategy when it comes to the Galaxy S line and which markets will get which models. For instance, it’s apparent that the Galaxy S III Mini is destined to pushed in Europe whereas the Note II and S III have been pushed pretty much everywhere and the Premier could well work in the US and in Europe. The real question is, why? Why is that Samsung feel the need to release so many phones cut from the same cloth – if they want to make a 4-inch phone, why not make a 4-inch phone and not a small Galaxy S III. I can see why they might go this route when it comes to manufacturing and costs but, I can’t help wonder whether or not Samsung are running the risk of diluting the Galaxy S III’s brand value.
