Back in August, Samsung announced a new camera that was a bit different from what we’ve seen in the past. While most cameras have a traditional interface, this camera dubbed the Galaxy Camera, features Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and not only has WiFi on-board with full access to the Google Play Store, but also will feature 3G and if you want it, 4G.
We haven’t seen anything quite like what Samsung has done with the Galaxy Camera and will be very interesting to see how well it performs and if the sales justify the concept and existence. Because it will have 3G and/or 4G connectivity, that means the camera will also be offered through a carrier.
Samsung’s Galaxy Camera recently passed through the FCC and appears that it’ll be landing on none other than AT&T. One thing of concern however is the price and if there will be a subsidized version. According to pre-orders in the UK, the Galaxy Camera will run upwards of $650 USD. That’s quite a bit for a 16 megapixel camera. Factor in also potentially paying for a 3G/4G data connection and we’re talking quite the investment.
Even though AT&T will possibly get the camera, something tells me most people will order the camera as-is and opt to just use WiFi instead. Then again, maybe I’m wrong. For having a 1.4GHZ quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage with microSD card support, and a 4.8 inch display with 308 ppi, it’s shaping up to be pretty impressive. That is of course if it doesn’t quickly drain the rather small 1,650 mAh battery.
Then again, we’re talking a camera here, not a full featured smartphone.
