Featured: Staples Suggests 8GB Nexus 7 Is Going Away?

Staples is getting ready for the holiday season, but they don’t anticipate that the 8GB Nexus 7 is going to be a very big part of the holiday rush. In fact, internal documents show that the device is getting ready to go on clearance sale on October 30th, the day after Google’s big Android event in New York City.

Staples is one of the few retail stores to sell the 8GB Nexus 7, but this office supplier is ready to retire the device. We’ve not heard anything about Office Depot’s plans. As one of the few other spots offering the device for sale, Office Depot is likely to follow suit. After all, neither company seems to have many 8GB Nexus 7 devices in stock at their stores. (If you’re in the U.S., check out stock levels at nearby stores for Staples and Office Depot.)

October 29th is the date of the Android event, and Google is expected to officially announce the 32GB Nexus 7 there. Staples looks as though they’ll be ready to put the device on shelves the next day. The real question from here is whether the 16GB devices will be marked down to the $199 spot previously occupied by the 8GB version.

It is possible that Google is pulling the 8GB Nexus 7 in order to only sell it online — if they continue to sell the device. The one thing that appears certain is that retail stores will only be carrying 16GB and 32GB versions of the Nexus 7 after the dwindling supply of 8GBs run out.
