Last night we broke news that Google was in talks with Dish network in a joint venture to use Dish network’s spectrum. We all speculated about how awesome it would be on Google+ all night long. Today, it appears that this is actually going to be happening as early as next year. Currently reports are telling us that Google is already deep into developing plans to have their wireless service live mid-2013.
It appears that Google has plans to make their wireless service for data-only with Voice and SMS services being part of VoIP services, most likely to work with Google Voice. As you might know already, Google has already stepped into the ISP land with Google Fiber which is rolling out on the Stanford campus, and just opened Fiber up in Kansas City. If you aren’t aware, Google Fiber offers speeds of 1GB download and 1GB upload, that’s insane and blows away Verizon’s LTE which theoretically maxes out at 100MB download.
So why would Google want to make it’s own wireless service? Well since AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all continue to block services from Google including Google Wallet. So far the only carrier to really cooperate with Google Wallet and Google Voice is Sprint. So in order for Google to really get consumers to use their services, they’ll have to do it themselves. The saying goes, “if you want it done right, you have to do it yourself”. Looks like that’s what is in Google’s mind.
On the other side, Dish network has also said on numberous occasions that they want to build a wireless network with the wireless spectrum they’ve acquired in the past four years. In fact you may remember that Dish was one of the company’s looking to buy T-Mobile, and instead Metro PCS will be merging with the magenta carrier. Many people are still wondering why Google hasn’t tried to buy up T-Mobile yet and change them over to Google Wireless (perhaps Google Voice?).
Looks like a Google Wireless Service is coming soon! Who’s excited and ready to switch? Let us know in the comments what you think of a potential fifth national carrier in the US.
