It’s easy for Android fans to make fun of iOS, but the reality is that those who develop for it, tend to make more money there then they do on Android. There’s a good amount of reasoning behind it, one reason being that iOS users are known to spend more money. That sounds like a joke, but it’s the truth.
However, Android isn’t behind in terms of app revenue like it used to be. In fact, it’s quickly gaining on iOS. App Annie which provides app ranking data and mobile analytics, looked at the percentage of app revenue from iOS and Google Play.
In April of 2012, Google Play accounted for less than 30 percent of total app revenue. Jumping forward to July, it was just over 30 percent and now, at least as of September of this year, the number has jumped to 44 percent of total app revenue.
The gap is quickly closing and while iOS users tend to get apps first, the idea that little money can be made on Android is a myth. Yes, it’s a bit more work due to many versions of Android out there in the wild, but with the right strategy, it can be a nice revenue stream as well for developers.
